 FORUM

An Internet forum is a discussion area on a website. Website members can post discussions and read and respond to posts by other forum members. An Internet forum can be focused on nearly any subject and a sense of an online community, or virtual community, tends to develop among forum members.

Before a prospective member joins an Internet forum and makes posts to others, he or she is required to register. The prospective member must agree to follow certain online rules, sometimes called netiquette, such as to respect other members and refrain from using profanity.

As with social etiquette, a focal point netiquette is treating other people with courtesy and respect, whether people are users on a bulletin board or commentors on a newspaper's web site. We expect a high level of professionalism from our members. Professional netiquette discourages the use of emoticons, also known as smileys, and avoiding small talkgossip, and other distractions. Essentially, etiquette for electronic communications is identical to that of real-world ones; if something would look inappropriate in a printed letter, it would be wrong in an email OR forum.

When a member is approved by the administrator or moderator of the Internet forum, he/she can start a separate conversations in an Internet forum, called threads. Threads are made up of member-written posts. Internet forum members can edit their own posts, start new topics, post in their choice of threads.

An Internet forum administrator or monitor can modify threads as well as move or delete threads if necessary. Moderators help the administrator and moderate Internet forum members to make sure the forum rules are being followed.
